Piano music

India has always had a history of expressing the loftiest truths through music, and in the last hundred years, this wealth of music has now become available to the West.

The first great musician to come to light in the West was Rabindranath Tagore from Bengal. His poems were championed by such luminaries as Ezra Pound and W.B Yeats, and earned him the Nobel Prize in 1913. Over two thousand of these poems were put to music, and their haunting melodies remain sung to this day by both the educated and illiterate classes all over India. Kazi Nazrul Islam was another great singer to come out of Bengal; and wrote many songs expressing his appreciation for bot the Hindu and Muslim

religions. The singer Dilip Kumar Roy was known as ‘the golden voice’ and legend has it that wherever he went, people would stop the trains he was travelling on to hear him sing. He travelled all over India collecting music from all the great teachers. In recent times, the composer Sri Chinmoy has written over thirteen thousand songs in his native Bengali, and regularly holds concerts all over the west playing his compositions on a variety of instruments.

We all have our psychological, emotional, mental and physical barriers when it comes to practicing and/or performing. One such particularly difficult challenge is that many pianists simply cannot remember a piece. However, it is the emotional reaction to not remembering a piece which is the most painful. Andres Segovia has had a profound impact on every aspect of the modern classical guitar from technique, to repertoire, venue, and even the construction of the guitar. And while you can t take lessons from him you can learn much from the wonderful legacy he has left behind.

Learn From a pupil of the master

Although you can t take lessons from the master himself you can take lessons from one of the great guitarists that studied under him. Christoper Parkening is one of the more famous pupils that studied under Segovia and he has his own, highly acclaimed series of instructional books for the classical guitar. It is called the Christoper Parkening Method.

When most people think of taking keyboard lessons, they already have a certain style in mind. Classical, Jazz, Contemporary, New Age… all these styles are available to learn.

The problem is, most students, especially adult students don’t want to wait months or even years before they can play something that sounds like music. Especially with the classical style, students are expected to master note reading and do everything “correctly” before they get to play something creative.

And what they do end up playing is usually a piece that was written way before their grandparents were born.
