Having played the guitar for a number of years, I am often asked this question by eager learners - “Should I start learning with the acoustic or electric guitar?” In this article, I’ll talk a bit about both so you can come to an informed decision.

First of all, let me get something straight. The actual notes and fretboards work the same for both, so if you start with either one, its always interchangeable, although the playing techniques might differ.

When a painter is getting ready to paint, a color palette is usually chosen first. For example, if a forest is to be painted, the artist may choose browns, greens, and blues for the sky. Once the palette is chosen, it makes it easier to create the painting. Why? Because color decisions are now out of the way.

We can apply this concept to music as well. In particular, New Age piano playing. In your lesson, Reflections in Water, we have four chords to play with and we have the order in which they are to be played. Now, all that is required “to paint” your sound portrait is the ability to take these chords and play around with them.

The Spanish Guitar Emerges:

With the coming of the Renaissance, inspired in part by Moslem learning brought home by returning Crusaders, the lute become the favorite instrument of Western Europe.

In Spain however, the lute was already overshadowed by a new instrument, the guitar. Two types of guitar were played by the Pyrenees: the vihuela, in the court and among fashionable society, and the guitarra latina, by ordinary folk. The former had eleven strings, five double and one single, and was plucked. The latter had four double strings and was strummed. Learning to play the guitar is not as hard as most people would think. It just requires a lot of discipline and passion. Below are some useful beginner’s guide to playing the ultimate musical instrument- the guitar.

1. Get a good teacher

If one can afford it, he should get a good guitar teacher who does not only have the technical skills in guitar playing but has the passion for teaching as well. There are many people who were able to learn to play the guitar by themselves without any formal training, however, the best and fastest way to learn is to have someone hold your hand as you go past the first few stages of guitar playing.
