Piano music

Be sure to make time this holiday season to celebrate the accomplishments your child taking piano lessons has made over the past year. Take time to listen to them as they play before family and friends and in their holiday recitals. This is also a great time to take some special photographs of your child at the piano. Collect photos of previous years and arrange them in a holiday piano memory book as a unique Christmas gift for your child. Be sure to leave plenty of room to add future photographs so your piano student can continue to celebrate their piano journey as they grow.

Back in the days when television didn t reign supreme, music played a much larger part in the entertainment of family and friends. So much so, that every home had a piano and more often than not at least one member of the family could play it. That s certainly the way it was in our family. And, for me as the designated pianist, I can honestly say that it was a pleasure to do it, even though I didn t act that way sometimes.

Part of the challenge for me was finding sheet music that I liked, especially at Christmas time. I always felt that the piano arrangements were quite boring and lacked a certain joie

de vivre. I think that s why I eventually started learning improvisation so that I could make up my own arrangements. And, because I didn t like the standard Christmas versions in print, I always acted like I didn t want to play. That drove my mother crazy.

We musicians are always looking for sheet music to play. New songs and hits are coming out everyday. Nonetheless, not everyone is blessed with the ability to play songs by ear. I know I don’t, even after almost 20 years of playing the piano. I, like many musicians still rely heavily on the sheet music.

When you hear the song that touches your heart, you almost instantly want to play it. Next you go online to search for the free sheet music, only to find that it’s like finding a needle in a haystack. Most of the so called free sheet music websites require you to pay. Then, you decide that it is not possible to find the freebies online, you

go ahead and purchase the sheet music. Later you notice that the sheet music is not accurate, or you are simply not happy with the arrangement! Are all these d j vu to you?
